Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced he is willing to conduct a presidential election during the current war, on the condition that Ukraine's parliament and international allies approve. This announcement follows accusations from the U.S. President that he was refusing to relinquish control.
Clearly irritated by the comments from abroad, Zelenskyy emphasized that "The decision for the citizens of Ukraine, and not for individuals from partner countries, with all necessary respect to our friends."
Nevertheless, he vowed to explore options for carrying out a vote in the near future. "Since this issue is now being raised by the President of the U.S., our ally, I will respond succinctly: understand, I am ready for elections," Zelenskyy remarked on Tuesday evening.
"Moreover, I am requesting ... the U.S. to support me, potentially alongside European partners, to ensure security for the elections, and subsequently within the following 60-90 day period Ukraine will be ready to hold the elections. I personally have the determination and preparedness for this," he concluded.
These remarks were made by Trump in a rambling interview conducted by Politico earlier on Tuesday. "They haven't had an election in a while," claimed the U.S. president. "You know, they speak of a democracy, but it reaches a point where it's not a democracy any more."
Zelenskyy's five-year term expired in May of last year, but the nation's constitution forbids elections in a time of armed conflict. Furthermore, his critics have often said that security and political considerations make it impossible holding an election during hostilities.
"Holding a vote would only be detrimental," commented a lawmaker from the Holos party. "He's the supreme military commander, and the country is in a state where we don't have that option, whatever disagreements we might have with him. It would only help the opponent," he added.
Zelenskyy highlighted two primary issues that need solving: the practical issue of permitting soldiers, millions of refugees, and those living under occupation to participate, and secondly, how to constitutionally conduct a vote when a state of war is ongoing.
He requested guidance from partner nations on safeguarding the elections, and from members of parliament on how to amend the legislation to enable a election. "{I am waiting for proposals from partners, I am awaiting proposals from our MPs, and I am willing to participate in the elections," stated Zelenskyy.
Zelenskyy was speaking while returning to Ukraine after wrapping up a diplomatic tour to several European capitals. This comes as the U.S. administration has reportedly applying pressure on Kyiv to sign a ceasefire agreement.
Earlier, Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr., asserted at a conference that Zelenskyy was prolonging the war due to worries of losing power. He also indicated that his father might "disengage" from Ukraine if the hostilities continues. "{It's not correct. But it's not exactly wrong," said Trump, when questioned about his son's statement.
There are indications that the U.S. has proposed Ukraine should give up the Donbas region to secure peace, a concession that would be highly rejected within Ukraine. Furthermore, there is as of now little indication that Russia is ready to accept any agreement, including one that might seem favorable to Moscow.
