The deceased of a 34-year-old woman and her young daughter, 10 have been found inside freezers in an apartment in western Austria.

The deceased, a Syrian woman and her child, who had been unaccounted for for several months, were found on the end of last week. The cooling units were hidden behind a false wall in the flat, situated in the city of Innsbruck.

Two individuals, a 55-year-old Austrian and his brother aged 53, were taken into custody in the month of June. The elder brother, a colleague of the female victim, told police last week that there had been an accident—but denied intentional killing.

Informing reporters recently, a spokesman for the legal authorities said the brothers were being detained on "high likelihood of murder".

The names of those involved have not been released by police, in compliance with local legislation.

The vanishing of the mother and child was originally brought to light by the woman's cousin, who lives in Germany, on July 25, 2024.

Police stated the 55-year-old suspect informed them at the time she had embarked on an extended trip with her child to visit her parents in Turkey.

The mother's debit card was then found to have been used in foreign locations several times.

However when officers entered the victim's residence, her mobile phone was discovered.

Someone also claimed hearing a loud noise in the flat, and shouts of "mother" on the day the pair were presumed to have gone missing.

A broader official inquiry was started, with officers uncovering multiple communications sent from the mother's device—among them a notice of quitting to her workplace and messages to the male colleague.

Authorities stated a significant cash transfer was also sent to the man.

The head of the State Criminal Police Office informed reporters on recently that a storage unit had been secured before the vanishing and a cooling unit had been positioned inside.

The two suspects took out the cooling unit from the storage space on the date the victims disappeared, she revealed. And a seven days after, they purchased another freezer.

Authorities state they believe this suggests the fatalities were premeditated.

"The reason for their demise remains unclear due to the state of decomposition of the remains," the official stated.

A legal representative—representing the state—noted the precise timeline is yet to be determined, but the remains were professionally hidden and went unnoticed during a prior examination.

Although the suspects were taken into custody in the summer, it was not until the 12th of November that the elder brother acknowledged an occurrence and to concealing the remains. He rejects any murderous intent, officials stated.

At the same time, his 53-year-old sibling confessed to a concealment but denied knowledge of a homicide.

The pair are at this time in pre-trial detention in jails in two Austrian cities, situated at a distance.

Through a combined announcement, the nation's official for women's affairs and the top legal representative said the "alleged double murder... symbolizes the abrupt and violent termination of a mother and child and uncovers a heartless setup".

"Women and girls are being killed due to the mere fact that they are female," they added.

"Gender-based killings are a profoundly embedded and widespread concern that we must combat firmly."
