Pre-release tournaments for the next Magic: The Gathering expansion, Lorwyn Eclipsed, are set to start on January 16. Although the full spoiler season is scheduled to begin on January 5, head creator Maro Rosewater has again disclosed a long list of gameplay teasers before time.
Among the many teasers, a few are particularly notable. Lorwyn Eclipsed will include a "permanent that tutors every round." This probably indicates a enchantment that allows a you to search their deck each upkeep for a certain type, possibly with specific conditions.
This might be something as simple as finding a land card every turn, or a more dynamic such as a tutor that scales depending on a creature's power.
Rosewater also teased a fresh card that copies abilities that trigger. This card could be associated with Kirol, Attentive First-Year, a creature that, by tapping two untapped creatures, can copy a triggered ability one time each round.
A further standout reveal concerns rules text that will "negate every instants and sorceries your opponents have on the stack." Although its phrasing is slightly unclear, it implies an extremely potent effect capable of handling multiple castings at once.
The set will further include cards that utilize "the difference in its strength and toughness." With cards having stat lines like 1/3 or 3/1, this mechanic could prove highly meaningful.
A significant story reveal is a legendary card with the creature types: "Legendary Creature – Elf Faerie Noble." Given the historic tension among the Elf race and Faeries on this world, this combined identity hints at a significant story development.
The lead designer also stated the core 8 creature types featured in the set: Elemental, Elf, Faerie, Giant, Goblin, Kithkin, Merfolk, and Treefolk. This reiterates a heavy tribal focus for the set.
Toward the end in the list, he names "Bark of Doran," likely a reference to Doran, the Siege Tower, suggesting a continued focus on the interplay between attack and defense.
In addition to these headline mechanics, the set will feature:
Finally, the designer teased several titles, including Mirrorform, Moonshadow, Gilt-Leaf’s Embrace, and Chaos Spewer. These names provide preliminary glimpses into the set's story directions and serve as references to established concepts from the plane's history.
All told, Lorwyn Eclipsed isn't just a homecoming to a fan-favorite setting but also a test to see if contemporary Magic: The Gathering is able to embrace the unique weirdness that defined the first Lorwyn sets so memorable.
