Vicky McClure are set to reprise their characters in the popular crime series

The acclaimed crime series Line of Duty will make a comeback for its 7th installment, confirmed by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-part season written by the show's creator will begin filming in Belfast in the coming months, according to the production team.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, saying she was "so excited" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."

The previous series concluded in recent years with a final episode that drew in over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a new season have been circulating ever since, but official word only came this week.

New Challenges for AC-12

The seventh season begins with AC-12 no longer existing and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings continue working to combat misconduct within the police force.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio will take on their "most delicate case so far."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer celebrated for busts of organized crime, faces allegations of abusing his position to become a sexual predator.

Yet, this investigation might serve as a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, the teaser suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had countless fans watch the ups and downs of AC-12 over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a seventh installment."

He added: "Misconduct in the UK is supposed to have ended while the series was not airing, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor called being part of the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Not only the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "It goes without saying I'm very happy the show is returning! Can't wait to work with Jed, Compston and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the AC-12 return, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be back filming soon."

"Pleased with the announcement and anticipating those unexpected plot developments."

Show History

Line of Duty launched in 2012 and evolved into one of the most popular television series of the past ten years, attracting notable actors such as Lennie James.

Broadcasters has not yet announced exactly the new season will hit screens.

The finale of series six brought the long-running storyline about the hunt for kingpin known as "H" to a close, and producers said at the moment there were no intentions for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the network announced on this week that a new season is now in development.
