Eric Adams to Endorse Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayoral Race

New York City Mayor Mayor Adams declared his decision to support Andrew Cuomo in the upcoming mayoral race, despite months of public tension between the two Democratic figures.

A Surprising Reversal After Previous Accusations

Just last month, Adams had lashed out at the former governor, describing him as a “snake and a untruthful person” and alleging of having “a career of pushing Black candidates out of races.” Yet, in a recent statement, Mayor Adams made a U-turn, announcing he now plans to campaign alongside Cuomo in neighborhoods where he holds strong support.

“It's essential to mobilize the Black and brown communities that have been affected by gentrification on how vital this race is,” Adams commented.

Adams continued, “They have watched their rents increase in terms of neighborhood changes and they have been disregarded in those areas, and I plan to visit to those communities and talk directly with community leaders and groups and I’m going to walk with the governor in those neighborhoods and get them engaged.”

Election Landscape and Current Developments

The mayoral contest has so far been shaped by the competition between the former governor and democratic socialist his main rival, whose rise in the polls has drawn interest worldwide and represented hopes for a rejuvenated leftwing of the Democrats.

During a recent mayoral debate, both Mamdani and Republican nominee his conservative opponent declared they would refuse the mayor's support if extended.

Months ago, Adams had begun his bid for another term as an unaffiliated candidate after facing federal corruption charges which were later dropped in return for his assistance with government enforcement actions across New York City.

At an unrelated press conference on Thursday, Adams responded to reporters asking about the endorsement plan by saying, “Andrew and I will appear together this evening.”

This development came a day after the two politicians were spotted attending a game side-by-side at the the NBA team's first game at Madison Square Garden, which took place right after a heated mayoral debate.
